BURR'S FERRY
CONFEDERATE HISTORIC SITE
During the War for Southern Independence the Confederate Army constructed a series of defensive breastworks along the Sabine River in western Louisiana. A portion of those breastworks remain intact near the small town of Burr Ferry west of Leesville, La in Vernon Parish. For many decades the property belonged to the United Daughters of the Confederacy. In the 1950’s a marker was erected atop one of the breastworks.
In 2001 the Louisiana Division UDC graciously deeded the property to the Louisiana Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. The Louisiana Division SCV then acquired additional land joining the original property that is also part of the site. Many events have since taken place there. The first was the chartering ceremony for the Anacoco Rangers Camp from Leesville. They are also the Camp that provides the maintenance for the site. Later a ceremony was held after the erection of a flag display on the site.
Members form all over the Louisiana Divisions of the SCV and UDC attended the flag raising event, as well as OCR members from Louisiana and Texas. There were many other quests in attendance as well, including local public officials. A marker sits at the foot of the main flagpole commemorating the event.
The Site is now used for many events such as living histories, programs for school children, a tourist attraction and even social occasions ,
like an SCV BBQ.
Through the efforts of Compatriots of several Camps, Burr ferry is being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Louisiana Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is honored to be entrusted with this property and pledges that it shall ever remain as monument to the valor and honor of the Confederacy.
