Commander's Welcome

Welcome to the Louisiana Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans website.

Welcome to the Louisiana Division, Sons of Confederate Veterans website!

I am honored and humbled to have an opportunity to serve as the Commander of the Louisiana Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. I carry on a proud line of Division Commanders in an organization that has existed since 1896. My interest in the War Between the States since I was a young boy has brought me to this point. It was not until I found that I had Confederate blood in my veins did I realize that there was much, much more to my feelings and interest in the events that took place from 1861 to 1865. Being a member of the SCV has been one of the most fulfilling things in my life.

I am glad you stopped in to see what we are all about. This website serves as a tool for both current members, prospective members and other interested persons. It is my desire to have information posted in a timely manner; therefore, new announcements pertaining to the Division will be posted under the Upcoming Events link. Please visit this page often to see what events are happening in and around the state. Other items that can be found on our site are information on Louisiana Confederate soldiers, soldier burial locations and Louisiana military unit information. It is a wealth of information that can be of great assistance in doing research of your Confederate Ancestor. The Essays on Confederate Heritage link also contains great essays and papers on topics relating to Confederate and War Between the States History and Heritage, provided by members of the Division and others. Take your time and enjoy what our site has to offer.

I encourage as many Louisiana Division SCV members as possible to subscribe to the Division Email News List to receive prompt news and information from both your Division staff and members from across the State. Send an email to news@lascv.com and provide your name and camp number to start receiving mail.

If you are just now discovering your Confederate ancestry and wish to trace your genealogy, please contact our 1st Lieutenant Commander Thomas Taylor. His information can be found under the Division Directory link. He can help you get in touch with the Camp nearest you. You can also search for local Camps under the LA Division Camps link. Members will be glad to assist you in preparing the paperwork necessary to join the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Each Camp is autonomous and have a variety of ways that they honor the memory of our Confederate Heroes Camps engage in a variety of activities and special projects such as, sponsoring living history demonstrations in schools and reenactments, marking Confederate graves, and preserving historic sites. Every Camp holds a monthly meeting which, on occasion, includes historical presentations. In the month of June, Camps commemorate Confederate Memorial Day in their communities as well as supporting observances across the State.

Our Confederate ancestors fought to save our homeland from invading troops and it is our duty to see that their memory is not tarnished but given the respect and honor due them for the sacrifice they gave. We here in Louisiana have a reputation of being staunch defenders of that heritage bestowed upon us. Unfortunately, in these days and times, our Ancestors are not respected and remembered as they once were. We are the first line of defense in the protection of their good names and it is imperative that we ensure that a true history of the South is preserved and taught and the reasons for their sacrifice are never forgotten. General Robert E. Lee stated “Do your duty in all things. You cannot do more. You should never wish to do less”. Join us in doing that duty as set forth in the mission given to the SCV by Lieutenant General S.D. Lee in 1906 in New Orleans:

"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we submit the vindication of the cause for which we fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those principles he loved and which made him glorious and which you also cherish. Remember, it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations."
